What does a typical practice look like?
We adapt each session to the group’s experience and the aims of the practice. A typical session brings together several stages:
Preparation and warm-up. We begin with a bow and take a moment to focus on practice. The warm-up prepares the body for movement and training.
Fundamentals and repetition. We practise posture, footwork and sword swings (suburi), followed by basic strikes and their coordination with movement. The emphasis is on correct technique and gradual progress.
Partner practice. Structured exercises develop our sense of distance, timing and response to a partner. Experienced members practise in armour, while beginners build their foundations with guidance from the instructor.
Application and closing. Depending on the group, a session may include free practice (jigeiko), kata or further work on specific techniques. We finish by settling down, reflecting briefly on the session and bowing together.
What are we working towards?
We learn to bring intention, body movement and the sword into harmony. Practice develops coordination, endurance and concentration, along with the ability to stay composed and make clear decisions under pressure.
Respect for our partners, control of our movements and openness to feedback are equally important. Progress comes through consistency: returning to the basics, recognising mistakes and gradually correcting them.
What do I need to get started?
You build up your equipment gradually as you progress. There is no need to buy kendo equipment before your first practice.
The first three months · Sportswear
Comfortable sportswear and a bottle of water are enough. We practise barefoot, and the club provides equipment for your initial sessions.
After around three months · Kendogi, hakama and shinai
It is time for your own shinai, a bamboo practice sword, and kendogi and hakama—traditional kendo clothing. Before you buy, we will help you choose suitable equipment and the right sizes.

After around six to nine months · Bogu
Once you have learnt the basics and your instructor considers you ready, you begin training in bogu, kendo’s protective armour. We will discuss getting your own set at that stage.
